When alternative treatments have failed, Botox has become an option for some migraine sufferers. Botox relaxes the muscles in the head and neck, and block some nerves that send pain signals to the brain.
Mechanism of action:
The effects of Botox on headache pain have been tested extensively. Studies have shown that those who have chronic migraine which is resistant to conventional treatment protocols can be helped with Botox injections.Botox blocks the chemical changes that occur in nerve endings in the muscles, which tell you that you are experiencing pain. Low doses of Botox makes the muscles weak, rather than completely paralyzed.
Migraine that Respond to Botox:
Botox is injected to prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraine who have 15 or more days each month with headache lasting 4 or more hours each day in people 18 years or older.
Men and women do suffer migraines, although women are far more likely to have them than men. Generally, Botox can be given each 12 weeks to counteract migraines.
